Social Media is Not a Fad, It’s Ever-Evolving
I overheard the following comment the other day regarding social media: “Personally, I think those things are just fads.”
The comment came from a fellow journalist, and I couldn’t help but think that this person is a) living in an alternate reality, and b) may soon find themselves without a job.
I agree with this person, to a certain extent, that Facebook, Twitter and Myspace may die off in the years to come. “May” being the operative word. But they will only to be replaced by something else. True, the Internet is always evolving, but that doesn’t mean that social media will cease to exist. It will just change its form. And it is ignorant to think otherwise.
It is this type of mentality that has brought journalism to the place that it is right now. When will fellow journalists learn that we no longer control what is important, what is newsworthy? The general public, now more than ever, decides what they want to know about and when. And don’t for one second think they will get tired of that control. Don’t think for one second that social media is just a fad. This is just the beginning.

I hear the same sort of comments. I see it as the person doesn’t understand. Or if the person does understand, it gets down to a root of what we humans like to do. We like to try to elevate ourselves above other things. Saying things like, “Oh THAT? Oh please, that thing sucks” just to try to feel better putting things down to push yourself up. Aargh. I like to try to be more positive and optimistic. So I’ll follow my own advice and be positive about this person. We do need people to critique things in our world. I’m super happy that other people take those efforts on of complaining about taxes, because I personally love paying my taxes. SRSLY. I want to help, and being able to do something as brainless as paying taxes, is fantastic. It’s built right in. It’s a great service that we all do. Now should government be checked to make sure it dosn’t abuse it? Yes. But I’m glad to be here and just chug along and sing my tunes.
How about that? A post about social media sprouted a comment about taxes.
Wow, that is impressive. But doesn’t everything always come down to death and taxes?
Most people who knock things just to lift themselves are usually just scared. Uncharted territories make them uncomfortable. I’ll admit I’ve been like this in the past, but now it’s a thrill. I’ll take your advice though and remain positive about this person. Some people just need a little encouragement.
