Welcome Womankind Media!

17 February 2009 312 views 2 Comments

So in all my spare time, I’ve started another Web site to talk about women and their portrayal in the media (from a very non-hater, feminist perspective). Womankind Media wants to be a place for open discussion about women in the news (journalists and citizens alike). Here’s our mission statement:

Womankind Media provides a place for open discussion to talk about gender bias in the media. We aren’t placing blame. We aren’t man haters or bra-burning feminists. Womankind Media is just a group of educated, female journalists who want to understand the role of gender within the media in an attempt to equal the playing field for journalists and citizens alike.

    Hi Elizabeth,
What an interesting web site you have created. The representation of women in the media has had a long history of academic inquiry, but what really falls behind is research that actually looks into production processes, ie how do journalists experience the newsroom and how is a culture perpetuated that excludes most women from decision-making roles in the media.
I’ve just publsihed my first book:
The Gendered Newsroom: How journalists experience the changing world of media. It might be a useful link to begin a debate about what happens in newsrooms rather than what happens in news content.
